Handrails crafted
in timber, steel
& stainless
Custom handrail systems for staircases, balconies and decks — designed to building code, fabricated in our Dandenong South workshop and installed by our own team across Melbourne and Geelong.
The detail that defines
your staircase
A handrail is the most-touched part of any staircase. It is the element your guests notice first and your family uses every single day — which means it has to be both beautiful and structurally sound. A poorly chosen handrail dates an otherwise quality staircase; the right one ties every element together.
We design, fabricate and install handrails in timber, steel, stainless tube and glass-capped profiles — each engineered to Australian building standards and each finished to the level of detail our workshop is known for. Whether you are building new, renovating or replacing an existing handrail, we handle the whole project.
Three materials,
every aesthetic
Each material has its own character, maintenance profile and price point. We'll help you choose the right one for your project during a free measure-up consultation.
Most popular
Timber Handrails
Warm, tactile and enduring. Timber handrails suit traditional and contemporary homes equally well — from clear-finished Victorian Ash to dark-stained American Oak. We profile, sand and finish each rail in-house.
Contemporary
Steel & Stainless Handrails
Powder-coated steel for bold, industrial character — or brushed and mirror-polished stainless for a refined, minimal look. Both are welded and finished to a commercial standard at our Dandenong South workshop.
Premium
Glass-Capped Handrails
A slim timber or stainless top rail mounted above a frameless glass balustrade panel — the premium option for open, light-filled staircases. The glass does the structural work; the rail gives your hand somewhere comfortable to rest.
Timber Handrails
The warmth no other
material replicates
A timber handrail is unmistakably different in the hand — warm, solid and slightly yielding in a way that metal profiles never quite achieve. It ages with the home, takes on character over time and can always be sanded back and refinished if the style of your interior evolves.
We work with a range of Australian and imported hardwoods, shaping each profile on our workshop machinery before finishing by hand. You can choose from standard round, D-profile and flat-top sections, or we'll work with you to develop a custom profile that suits your balustrade and tread design.
- Victorian Ash, American Oak, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt available
- Round, D-profile, flat-top and custom profiles
- Clear, satin, matt and stained finish options
- Curved and return sections shaped to your stair layout
- Compatible with timber, steel and glass balustrade systems
- Supplied with matching newel post caps and wall brackets
Steel & Stainless
Precision formed,
built to last
Steel handrails give a home a harder, more architectural character — clean lines, sharp angles and a surface that reads as intentional and modern. Powder-coated mild steel suits bold colour choices; brushed stainless is the quietly confident option that never dates.
Every steel handrail we make is fabricated in our Dandenong South workshop — bent, welded, ground and finished before it arrives on site. We make our own brackets and wall flanges, so every detail is consistent. For outdoor applications we use 316-grade stainless, which is rated for coastal and high-humidity environments.
- Mild steel — powder coated in any Dulux colour
- 304 stainless — brushed or mirror polished, indoor
- 316 stainless — brushed, for outdoor and coastal use
- Round tube, flat bar, square tube and custom profiles
- Welded in-house — no exposed joins or mechanical fixings
- Wall-mounted and post-mounted configurations
Glass-Capped Handrails
Open, light-filled
staircases with presence
When you combine frameless glass balustrade panels with a slim capping rail, the result is a staircase that feels open and architectural without feeling unsafe. The 12mm toughened glass panels carry all the load; the capping rail — in timber or stainless — gives a comfortable, defined grip.
This is the system we use most often on high-specification new builds and renovations where the goal is a staircase that disappears into the space rather than dividing it. The glass keeps the sight lines open; the capping rail adds refinement at the point of contact.
- 12mm toughened safety glass — AS/NZS 2208 compliant
- Frameless spigot-mounted or channel-track systems
- Timber capping rail in any species and finish
- Stainless steel capping rail — brushed or polished
- Designed as a combined system — rail and glass sourced together
- Suitable for internal staircases and external decks

Victorian Ash — Clear
The most popular timber handrail species. Light, open grain with a warm honey tone. Available in satin and matt clear finishes.
Satin Black
The single most requested powder-coat colour. A near-matte black that reads as modern and considered against almost any interior.
Brushed — 304 Indoor
The most popular stainless finish. A directional satin brush that reflects light softly and does not show fingerprints. Recommended for indoor use.
Physical finish samples available at our Dandenong South and Armstrong Creek (Geelong) showrooms. Colours and finishes on screen may vary from the actual product.
BCA compliant by design — not as an afterthought
All handrail systems we design and install meet the requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) and Australian Standard AS 1657 for handrails and balustrades. Minimum heights, loading requirements, baluster spacing and fixing methods are built into our design process from the start — you do not need to manage compliance separately. We provide documentation for your building inspector on request.

Real results, real reviews
Best Stairs replaced our old pine handrail with a beautiful Victorian Ash clear finish. The difference is night and day — it feels like a completely new staircase. The workmanship was exceptional.
Had a custom satin black steel handrail installed on our deck. The team fabricated it perfectly and the installation was clean and fast. Exactly what we had in mind — highly recommend.
We wanted a frameless glass balustrade with a timber cap rail for our new build and Best Stairs handled it all — the glass, the rail, the design. The finished result is stunning. Really professional team.
Handrail FAQs
What height does a handrail need to be in Victoria?
Under the National Construction Code (NCC) as applied in Victoria, handrails on a staircase must be between 865mm and 1000mm above the nosing of the stair tread. For landings and walkways, the required height is between 1000mm and 1100mm. For balustrades above a fall of more than 1 metre, a minimum height of 1000mm is required. These are the most common requirements, but specific requirements can vary depending on the building classification and when the building was constructed. We design all of our handrail systems to comply with the current NCC, and we can advise on the specific requirements for your project during the consultation.
Can you replace just the handrail without replacing the whole balustrade?
In many cases, yes — replacing just the handrail is a practical and cost-effective upgrade. If your existing balustrade posts and balusters are in good condition and compliant, we can often simply remove the old handrail and install a new one in timber, steel or stainless. We'll assess the existing structure during the measure-up visit and advise you on whether the existing balustrade is suitable to retain. If it isn't — for reasons of compliance, condition or aesthetics — we'll give you a quote to replace both elements together.
Do you make curved or spiral handrails?
Yes — curved, helical and spiral handrails are a regular part of our work. Timber curved rails are shaped using laminated bending or steam-bending techniques depending on the species and radius. Steel curved rails are bent on our in-house machinery. For spiral staircases, we fabricate a continuous helical handrail that follows the staircase geometry precisely. Curved sections are priced at a higher rate per metre than straight sections, reflecting the additional fabrication time — we'll include this in your fixed-price quote.
Which is better for outdoors — stainless or powder-coated steel?
For outdoor applications, we recommend 316-grade stainless steel for most situations — particularly in coastal areas or environments with high humidity. 316 stainless has a higher molybdenum content than 304, which significantly improves its resistance to chloride corrosion (salt air). Powder-coated mild steel can be used outdoors but requires a high-quality primer and coating system and will need repainting if the coating is damaged. In practice, 316 stainless requires almost no maintenance outdoors and is our standard recommendation for deck and balcony applications within 10 kilometres of the coast.
How long does a handrail installation take?
The on-site installation of a standard straight handrail typically takes half a day. A full staircase with multiple flights, curves or returns may take a full day. The fabrication lead time in our workshop is generally 2–3 weeks from deposit. The total timeline from our first visit to completed installation is typically 3–5 weeks, depending on our current schedule and the complexity of your handrail. For new builds with a fixed builder programme, we ask for as much lead time as possible and will work with your builder's schedule wherever we can.
Do you supply and install, or just supply?
We do both — but our preference and recommendation is supply and install by our own team. Our installers know how our handrails are made and how to fix them correctly, which means the finished product performs and looks exactly as intended. We do supply-only for builders and contractors who prefer to manage their own installation, and in these cases we provide detailed fixing instructions and are available to answer questions. Supply-only orders are priced separately from supply-and-install; contact us to discuss your requirements.
